Becoming More You
What’s the one thing you will do today to become more you?
We are always in one of two states of being: the creative state and the survival state.
The creative state is our natural state. It’s the state when we’re calm, relaxed, loving, and at our best. This is the version of who we truly are.
Think about how you show up when things are going well. You’re happy, calm, open, thinking clearly, noticing possibilities.
The survival state is the opposite.
Think about how you show up under stress. You’re reactive, narrow, just trying to get through the next five minutes.
Same person. Two completely different versions of you.
Real progress, and success happen effortlessly when we’re in the creative state.
But here’s the harsh reality.
Given the state of the world we live in, it’s easy to slip into survival mode. Stress, anxiety, fear, and insecurity are so widespread and deeply ingrained, we barely even notice it.
Result? We keep grinding through the same struggles rarely able to find our true purpose.
To experience real success, happiness, and fulfilment, we need to get out of the survival state and into the creative state.
So how do we get back to our creative state?
The answer is simple: learn how be in the creative state as often as possible.
I will share 3 specific ideas that have helped me get back to this creative state.
1. Awareness.
You can only change what you’re aware of. When you develop the self-awareness to recognize which state you’re in, you can begin to do something about it. If might observe - “I spend 60% of my day in reactive mode, just getting through the day.” - now I can do something about it.
Awareness is the foundation of change.
2. Meditate.
Given so much is going on in our world today, meditation is no longer a buzzword. When I started meditating, it felt like yet another “self-help” routine I needed to finish. As days passed, I began to realize such a powerful habit it is.
Before meditating, I was just like everyone else: reactive, stressed, anxious, pushing things harder than I needed to.
After getting into the habit of meditation, I could see the change in my personality within days. I was more relaxed, calm, and in the flow. I wasn’t getting stressed or bothered by the little things in life.
Meditation isn’t optional. It allows you to build a strong mental muscle to navigate the complexities of modern life.
3. Stop Saying “Yes” to Everything.
When I was young and hungry to succeed, I said “yes” to everything because it was a necessity. Later, as I became successful, I realized that habit had gotten ingrained into my personality.
This one habit has caused the most suffering in my life. Now I say “no” to most incoming requests and think critically before saying “yes.”
If you too are saying “yes” to everything, start building the habit of saying “no” more often.
The result? You’ll be left with a lot more time to think and act on ideas that truly elevate you.
Every day, every hour, every moment, we default to one state or the other.
The choice of the state we are in determines how we experience our life. And that choice is always available.
